Christmas Shopping

I had most of my shopping done weeks ago, but my friend needed to go into the city to pick up a few things so I accompanied her to the mall with the promise of going to the yarn store afterwards. I'm not a fan of malls, but for yarn and a latte I will go just about anywhere. I also helped my friend pick out some gorgeous grey alpaca/merino as a Christmas gift to me. Yarn is such a personal thing and she wanted to make sure she bought something I would actually use, not just have sit in my ever growing stash.

I have this theory that you can tell a lot about a person from the yarn they choose. All my friends that are knitters seem to be automatically drawn to yarn that reflects their personality. And I don't just mean the yarn reflects their sense of style, which of course it would, but they seem to be drawn to fibres/colours/styles that reflect who they are as a person. Anyone else notice this? It makes me wonder what my yarn choices say about me....

With the early morning light streaming through the windows I snapped a few slightly blurry outfit photos before I left. My outfit doesn't look super warm but it was. It was -18C outside and we had a 40 minute walk to the yarn store (since someone is too cheap to pay for transit...) so I made sure to wear many layers. Under the dress is another heavier-weight skirt and a tank-top. I also wore a pair of knee socks over-top of my thick stockings (I would have added a pair of bloomers too if I had of remembered). By the time I added my scarf, gloves, earmuffs, winter coat, and riding boots I was as warm as anything. Long skirts/dresses are my new favorite "winter wear". I've found they keep my legs even warmer than trousers.

  1. I'm of the same mind when it comes to cold weather dressing- skirts/dresses are much warmer than slacks, especially when you layer up underneath! Your outfit is wonderful, I particularly love the ruffles on the dress!

I just popped over to Phonograph Fashions and I've got to tell you, I love what I'm seeing! Beautiful stuff!

  2. What a lovely outfit! I've found dresses to be quite warm, too. It's all about the layering, but we don't get that cold here very often. I really admire you northern gals and your ability to look fabulous in seriously cold temperatures, ice, and snow. And blue look great on you.
I crochet a little, but don't knit. It's probably just like fabric though, we all prefer certain colors, textures, and patterns that fit who we are. But now I am wondering what my preferences say about me, especially when I think of some of the wild prints and colors of fabric I've bought, lol.

    1. Yes, layering is the key!

And yeah, I think it is likely the same with fabric (although personally I'm usually better at matching a yarn to someone than a fabric). Perhaps your wild prints/colour suggest a sense of fun and playfulness? :)

  3. Not being a knitter myself, I can't really weigh in there, but you've certainly piqued my interest. If I went yarn shopping with you, I'm curious if the skeins I was drawn to first would be a good representation of personality too?

    1. That would be an interesting experiment. I suspect you would have an excellent taste in yarn :)

  4. It sounds jolly cold where you are! Good job all those layers work.

I'm not sure what my yarn choices say about me... I have a lot of odd balls of 4ply that I hang onto because I'm convinced it will be useful one day. Nitpicking skinflint, perhaps! What plans do you have for your alpaca/merino, that sounds lovely.

    1. No plans for it yet. It was rather expensive so there is only enough yardage for something small like a hat or gloves. I'll just have to wait for the perfect pattern to come along :)

  5. Eeek I can't stand the mall either I think my yarn collection shows I am more ambitious then persistent because I have a large and varied stash and I rarely complete a project

    1. I think a varied collection is a good thing. It would be boring if it was all the same :)
